Luck of the Irish: Fun, Family-Friendly Activities to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to celebrate the wonders of Irish culture. Embrace all that is green and gold -just don’t get yourself tricked by a leprechaun! Here are a few ways for you all to enjoy this pre-spring holiday:

Arts and Crafts

Grab as much green construction paper as your heart desires and have you and your children cut out beautiful shamrocks to hang around the house. Include this adorable project made from paper plates, cotton fillings, and tissue paper. Have any leftover green beads from Mardi Gras? There are endless possibilities for what you can make from it!

Learn About Ireland and St. Patrick

Ireland is where the holiday came from after all. Learn about the history of why we celebrate the life of St. Patrick (hint: no literal snakes were driven off). Then, learn about the rest of the history and culture of Ireland as well as the history and contributions of Irish-Americans who made St. Patrick’s Day how it is today. And as a bonus, listen to some Irish music and take a jab at writing a limerick for a lesson in Irish poetry.

Attend an Event

While the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Washington, DC is canceled this year, there are plenty of other exciting local events for the family. Gaithersburg, MD will be having its annual St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, March 16, 2019 with live entertainment. There is also the much larger Shamrock Fest in Washington, DC on Saturday, March 23, 2019 where there will be plenty of food, drinks, performers, and even carnival rides!
