5 Simply Simple Ways Break Up With Plastic

It’s time to take a break!  We have to break up with plastics because plastics are breaking our environment. What better time to start than Earth Day 2020! April 22 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day so let’s honor this special day by consuming fewer plastic products. Get this: research indicates that more than 8.3 billion tons of plastic have been manufactured since the 1950s and is estimated that a staggering 60 percent of it is in a landfill or somewhere in the environment, including our oceans. Here are five simple things you can do to reduce plastic use.

Rethink Your Straw

Stop using plastic straws and ask restaurant owners to quit serving them too! This one small thing could make a big, big difference. Start using recyclable paper straws, reusable stainless steel, or glass straws.

Pack Fabric Shopping Bags

Tuck a reusable cloth bag into your handbag, book bag or keep some in your car. Take them everywhere you go, to the grocery store, thrift shop, farmer’s market or anywhere that plastic bags are used. Wash them in-between visits to keep them clean and ready to go.

Reuse Storage Containers

Instead of buying plastic bags and containers to store leftovers and freeze food, purchase reusable containers that can be safely used multiple times. Take reusable storage containers to restaurants to use instead of styrofoam.

Resist Buying Bottled Water

Just say no to bottled water. Take reusable water bottles with you instead. There are many brands available that are spill-proof, insulated and even fashionable.

Recycle Recyclable Plastics

It’s good to know that some plastic products can be recycled. They will include a resin identification code, usually on the bottom of the product that includes a number from 1 to 7 indicating how it should be recycled.
