Spring is here and summer is not far away. Now is the time to start planting so your garden will be lush to enjoy the season. If you’re not feeling confident about your green thumb, here are some tips to help with the fertilizing stage.
Use the Right Kind of Fertilizer
For flowerbeds, use a slow-release single application fertilizer and apply topically before the plants start blooming. Keep an eye out for yellow or light-green leaves as the plants grow, and use a small, liquid fertilizer spot treatment if necessary. Produce gardens can use a combination of granular and liquid fertilizer. Next, add your seeds or transplants. Finally, top with compost and mulch for the most colorful, flavorful produce.
Use the Right Amount of Fertilizer
Flower gardens do not require a large amount of fertilizer, so keep your treatments light. A single application of slow-release granules or powders is usually sufficient. A produce garden will be focused on healthy soil. If you’re using granular or pellet fertilizers, these should be mixed into the soil at 2-4 inches deep. Liquid fertilizers should remain 3-4 inches from your seeds.
Fertilize at the Right Time
Fertilize your flower garden in March or early April. You want to wait until you can expect continued warm weather. If you’re not seeing regular growth by late April or early May, consider using an additional fast-acting liquid fertilizer. If you’re growing produce, you also want to focus your fertilizing efforts in March and early April or whenever you feel the beginning of spring weather.
