Finding The Perfect Halloween Pumpkin In Three Steps

Pumpkins are the unofficial symbol of Halloween, adorning windows and porches across the country every October.

The tradition of carving Jack O’Lanterns has been around for centuries. However, the first Jack O’Lanterns were not pumpkins. In Ireland, potatoes, turnips, and beets were hollowed out and a light was placed inside to ward off evil spirits. When Irish immigrants came to America, they discovered pumpkins, a native fruit, and they were much better for carving.

One of the most fun things about carving pumpkins is that there are no hard and fast rules. The design possibilities are limitless, from a simple silly smile to an elaborate scene covering the entire surface. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect Halloween pumpkin.

Look for a Deep, Vibrant Color

A pale or dull pumpkin won’t keep long. Some green patches are okay, as pumpkins continue to ripen even after they are picked.

There Should Be No Visible Bruising or Soft Spots

These are signs of rotting. Small blemishes shouldn’t be a problem if you plan to carve the pumpkin right away, but avoid them completely if you need it to hold up for some time. To check for soft spots, use your hands to gently press around the pumpkin.

Go for a Green Stem

A green handle indicates the pumpkin is in good health, whereas a brown one or a stem with mold are signs of decay.

Jack O’Lanterns are a fun and simple way to add personality to your home decor. Try placing a single pumpkin on an outdoor table on your porch for a dramatic effect, or scattering a few across an accent cabinet with candles and a candy dish for a warmer feel.
