Most people who live in the Mid-Atlantic states realize that winter weather in our area can be unpredictable. Enduring the aftermath of a Nor’easter is unpleasant for everyone in your home. You’ll feel a lot less stressed if you take the time to stock your house with critical emergency readiness supplies. We encourage you to use this winter storm emergency checklist as a guide to help you prepare your home and your family.
Battery-Powered LED Lanterns and Batteries
LED lanterns are useful during power outages. Use them for ambient light or as you’d use a flashlight. LED lights are best because they don’t get hot, and they use less power, so they last longer.
Bottled Water and Non-Perishable Food
If a winter storm causes widespread power outages, you won’t be able to cook. You should avoid opening your refrigerator and freezer to keep the food inside as cold as possible. As long as the outage doesn’t exceed 48 hours, the food inside your refrigerator and freezer is safe to eat – provided no one opens the refrigerator or freezer doors. Plan on having a gallon of water per day per person on hand. Nut butter, bread, single-serving portions of tuna, salmon, and fruit will tide people over for the duration of the storm and cleanup.
Hand Sanitizer and Wipes
It’s not uncommon for winter storms to impact utility services – including water and sanitation. You should assume that your water isn’t safe to use, so hand sanitizer is a safe alternative to hand washing. Wipes will come in handy for cleaning up little messes.
Cellphone Chargers
Make sure you have fully charged USB chargers for your cellphone and tablets. You’ll be able to use your cellphone to get updates from the power company about outages and when the company expects service resumption.
We’ve offered suggestions as to the essential items you should have on hand before a winter storm. Don’t wait until the last minute to get critical supplies!
