Ants, mosquitoes, and gnats, oh my! These are just a few of the uninvited pests that always join the outdoor entertaining and patio fun. There are a variety of products on the market to get rid of them, but natural remedies are better for you and the environment. Here are three natural ways to keep bugs away.
Remove Standing Water
Look inside buckets, bird feeders, flower pots, outdoor furniture, old tires, toys, and any other spots where standing water can accumulate. Water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and gnats and the smallest puddle can create hundreds of them. Simply turn over any containers, store buckets, toys, and pots and make sure fountains are working and you will see fewer mosquitos.
Essential Oils, Flowers, and Herbs
Herbs and essential oils are known to naturally repel bugs. Citronella is a strong, citrusy smelling essential oil that is available in popular candles, oils, and incense. Not as well-known is the Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) that has a citrus and menthol scent and repels most insects including ticks. The aroma of lavender and marigolds are two flowering plants that insects dislike, too. Create an arrangement in a decorative container, and display on your deck, outdoor furniture, and throughout the yard.
Vinegar and Cayenne Pepper
These pantry essentials are superheroes for pest control. Combine vinegar and water into a bottle and spray around the perimeter of your property, on tabletops (vinegar is a wonderful cleaner), the legs and bottom of your outdoor furniture and accents to keep the ants away. Sprinkle cayenne pepper in areas where ants live or gather to keep them off your property.
